What to Look Forward to From Diverse Producers, Actors and Directors in 2021

You’ve probably seen the announcements this week about the highly-anticipated film slate that Netflix has lined up this year. While we’re still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and no one is looking forward to being cooped up for additional months, we ARE thrilled about some new movie releases.

And we’re extra excited because this year’s slate includes a bunch of films that feature diverse talent in front of and behind the camera.

Here’s what we’re looking forward to streaming this year:

The Harder They Fall

A western starring Regina King, Jonathan Majors and Idris Elba

Red Notice

An action film starring Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson

Thunder Force

A superhero film starring Octavia Spencer and  Melissa McCarthy

Bruised

Directed by Halle Berry

Beauty

A Lena Waithe-written and produced film.

tick, tick… BOOM!

Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda

And there’s so much more coming, including Malcolm & Marie, which we discussed last year. Based on the fact that Netflix recently closed a long-term deal to be the creative home of the film division of Kevin Hart’s HartBeat Productions, we’re sure there will be more streaming Black comedies coming soon as well.

But it’s not just Netflix that’s delivering strong Black leads in 2021. Crackle Plus, the video streaming platform that is owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, is releasing a new interview series featuring BIPOC industry figures. According to Deadline:

Inside the Black Box will see [emmy-Award Winning Joe Morton] and [Tracey Moore] share deep conversations with industry names including Debbie Allen, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Phylicia Rashad, Shonda Rhimes, Sherri Shepherd, and Tamara Tunie. Named after an industry reference to an experimental theatre space, the new series will feature hour-long episodes of performance, workshops and discussions about the role race plays in the entertainment world.”

Inside the Black Box is set to premiere Juneteenth, June 19.

Although we’re not sure yet how 2021 will turn out, we’re sure to be entertained along the way.
