Position Summary

KQED provides free resources to teachers and students that advance media literacy skills and civic engagement and that amplify youth voice. We produce the award-winning video series Above the Noise, the youth media site KQED Learn, and KQED Teach, which provides professional development courses for educators, among other services. We also support teachers and students in youth media production projects, through media challenges and KQED’s Youth Takeover.

The production assistant for KQED Education will collaborate with the Education team to produce digital educational media to support our department’s work in instructional design, youth media production, and community engagement via social media.

A detail-oriented, self-driven person, the production assistant will be responsible, along with the production team, for successfully supporting the production, distribution, and organization of the Education team’s media assets on time and budget to fulfill project objectives.

Key Responsibilities/Accountability:

Above the Noise support: (70 %)

Research stories and assist in the development of Education series and properties such as Above the Noise, Youth Takeover, KQED Learn and KQED Teach

Produce digital media assets, in particular social media shareables such as .gifs, video excerpts, Instagram stories and more, to assist with promotion and distribution of multi-platform digital media projects such as Above the Noise, KQED Learn and KQED Teach.

Assist digital media producers with Above the Noise deliverables, in particular: re-versioning episodes for various distribution platforms, ordering and editing captions and transcripts in English and Spanish, and designing thumbnail images.

Produce small to mid-scale motion graphics, infographic design and video assets for Above the Noise and KQED Teach

Coordinate production, including scheduling crew, securing permissions and permits, organizing gear, and making travel arrangements

Assist with the video production — including duties such as operating second camera on video shoots, operating teleprompter, managing media cards, and setting up and breaking down equipment

Assist with archival research and tracking rights information for third party media elements, and filling out and archiving cue sheets for third party elements

Media asset management: ingesting all media into system, logging metadata, uploading all deliverables

Assistant editing: from creating assemblies to exporting and delivering finished works to various platforms and distribution channels

Assist with the tracking of metrics to help the Education department evaluate the impact of our media distribution and promotional strategies.

Assist with the distribution of media assets through publishing to YouTube, PBS LearningMedia, PMS Media Manager, Facebook Watch and other platforms.

Organize and maintain digital and physical production files, including releases, cue sheets, final production reports

Youth Media Support: (30%)

Work with KQED News to record, edit and mix selected Youth Media submissions

Work with Youth Media team to assist in youth media- making both at KQED and on location at participating school sites, including providing pitch and script feedback

Assist with, and facilitate the creation of, “breaking” youth media reports

Perform other departmental duties as assigned

Knowledge/Experience Required:

Must be organized, detail-oriented, and possess creative problem-solving skills. This is the foundation for working collaboratively within a variety of different content areas and teams

At least 1-2 years experience in digital media production; especially with Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator and AfterEffects

An understanding of digital production with a focus on diverse projects that include web, mobile, social

Must be an effective communicator, both verbally and of the written word, and display solid collaboration skills necessary to work with a large variety of diversified teams

Consistently deliver projects on time and within budget

Demonstrate the ability to prioritize project deliverables while troubleshooting

Strong organizational and research skills

Ability to work well with others and also independently

Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Strong knowledge and passion for education and youth culture

Basic knowledge of journalistic editorial principles, ethics and standards.

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

Bilingual Spanish & English
